Peter Bewsher, 35, of Greendykes, Egremont, Cumbria, was in court on Tuesday (6 November) to be sentenced after pleading guilty to three charges of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.
Bewsher received a 12-week suspended sentence for two years, a £5,400 fine and a two-year disqualification from keeping dogs.
Naturewatch Foundation continues to help police uncover wildlife crime
Bewsher was exposed back in 2022 in imagery recovered by Naturewatch Foundation investigators. Bewsher had posted on social media images of himself indulging in the brutal persecution of wildlife using his dogs. An information package was initially sent to Cumbria Police, which worked with the RSPCA to assist in an investigation and subsequent prosecution. The injuries his dogs sustained were clearly of no concern to Bewsher.
Jim Clark, Naturewatch Foundation’s wildlife crime campaign manager, added, “We are pleased to see the sentence handed to Bewsher today and hope it sends a message to those who sickeningly enjoy using their dogs to persecute wildlife. Our Naturewatch Foundation investigators are experienced and tenacious and produce credible, accurate information packages. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement to bring those who commit wildlife crimes and persecute the voiceless to justice. It is not a right to own an animal but a privilege. The injuries Bewsher’s dogs sustained show his total disregard for animal welfare.”
