Barbaric Jason Kennedy admitted a string of animal cruelty offences at Dungannon Crown Court last week, including badger baiting and causing animal fights. The circumstances of his crimes are horrific but involved setting dogs on badgers, foxes and domestic cats. Sadly, many animals suffered a truly unimaginable death at Kennedy’s hands.
Naturewatch Foundation investigators first became aware of Kennedy in 2021. They provided the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) with information packages to assist in their investigation and subsequent conclusion of prosecution. The judge sitting at Dungannon Crown Court blasted Kennedy’s actions and said, ‘I find it impossible to understand how any human being could deliberately set up the circumstances for such cruelty to another animal. In my opinion, what the defendant did was from some distorted view of sport and is sadistic and cruel.‘
Specifically about the animals targeted, she said, ‘As can be imagined, the suffering of the cats and badgers who were attacked by several frenzied dogs is immense.‘
Kate Salmon, Naturewatch Foundation’s Wildlife Crime Manager, added, ‘Our investigation into Jason Kennedy and suspected badger crime and abused dogs dates back to 2021, when we brought Kennedy to the attention of PSNI. We are pleased that he has been jailed for his barbaric acts of cruelty towards both wildlife and domestic animals and thank the court and PSNI for the action taken.‘
